Back to Basics

Gardening is my time to unwind and escape to nature.   Whether you have a backyard or just a spot in your apartment where sunlight pours through, you can create your very own oasis.

To start your garden, you need to decide what you want to grow and where you want to plant.   If you want lots of colors, then invest in flowers that will bloom from spring till the first frost.   Roses are my go-to flower.  Not only are they beautiful, but need little maintenance.

Flowers and plants can be expensive so I recommend setting a budget. Seeds are inexpensive depending on where you buy them.   Sometimes my local grocery store has a deal on seeds and there is always Dollar Tree. For the last two summers, I have planted Zinnias from seeds.   Zinnias come in a mix of bright colors and they attract butterflies.

For annuals (plants that only bloom for one season only) I buy from Walmart.   You can find a six-pack of assorted flowers for under two dollars.

For specific plants and herbs check with your local nursery.   I like to plant catnip and cat mint for the feral cats to enjoy, but I won’t be able to find those plants at Walmart.   Not only will you find an assortment of plants at your local nursery, but you will also help your community by supporting local businesses.

If you want to plant flowers that will come back year after year, then perennials are your friend.   During the fall, plant bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths.   You will look forward to seeing them bloom during early spring.   Plant irises and lillies and enjoy seeing them bloom in late May to late June.

For ground cover flowers and plants, Phlox come in wonderful shades of light purple to vibrant raspberry pink.   If you like more greenery, hostas bring out their mostas with their gigantic leaves and various shades of evergreen.

There is a lot of trial and error when it comes to gardening.   It takes time to learn what plants grow better in one particular location than another.   Regardless of what you choose to plant, make sure you read the instructions before planting.   Invest in soil that has nutrients.   Poke enough holes in your flower pots for proper drainage.   And enjoy watching your plants thrive.

Happy Gardening!
